Dr. Debasmita P. Alone heads the Molecular Genetics group at School of Biological Sciences, NISER. She received her M.Sc. in Biochemistry from Department of Biochemistry, Nagpur University and a Ph.D. from Cytogenetics Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Banaras Hindu University. Her graduate work with Prof. Jagat K. Roy, focused on Molecular genetic analysis of Rab11, a small GTPase along with characterization of l(3)tb, a novel tumour suppressor gene in Drosophila . She joined (late) Dr. Howard A. Nash in 2003, at Laboratory of Molecular Biology, National Institute of Mental Health, NIH, Bethesda, USA, where her post doctoral work was aimed at unraveling the molecular targets of general anaesthetics using copy number variation. Her intense discussions with (late) Prof. Harvey S. Mudd, Scientist Emeritus at NIMH on various topics of human health and disease tremendously shaped her current interests. Since joining NISER in 2010, her lab focuses on understanding the molecular genetics and epigenetics of various neurodegenerative eye disorders (Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma and Fuchs endothelial Dystrophy) and Cancer
